OMT WebOrganization and Management Theory Division of the Academy of Management
This year’s OMT Junior Faculty Consortium included 30 junior faculty from the following parts of the world: Austria, Australia, Canada, China, Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States. In addition, 17 senior faculty participated as mentors and panelists.
The event began Thursday night with a cocktail hour, dinner, and an evening of socializing at the Fire and Ice Café in Anaheim. We began the consortium’s official program on Friday morning. The program included two Research Roundtables, where senior faculty mentors engaged with two or three junior faculty and discussed a research idea each of them was currently developing. The program further included panels, intended to help participants navigate their career as junior faculty members. During the first one, we discussed "Managing the early years in the life of a faculty" with Marya Besharov (Cornell University), Anca Metiu (ESSEC Business School) and Chi-Nien Chung (NUS). We then focused on "Building a research program and publishing it" with Mary Benner (University of Minnesota), Aparna Joshi (Penn State University) and Matt Kraatz (Univeristy of Illinois).
We had a working lunch in which participants and senior faculty mentors discussed early career issues. Following the working lunch the final consortium activity was a panel discussion during which we asked senior faculty professors to reflect upon their career path. Entitled "Looking back: Wisdom from full faculty", the panel triggered a very engaging discussion with Royston Greenwood (University of Alberta), Anne Tsui (University of Arizona), and Violina Rindova (University of Southern California).
In the mid-afternoon, some of the participants in the consortium joined the OMT Teaching Roundtables. We look forward to the junior faculty consortium next year in Atlanta and hope that you will consider applying if you are an early career faculty member. Keep your eyes open in the spring for an announcement about how to apply!
